South Carolina is nicknamed the Palmetto State, and entered into Statehood on May 23, 1788.  The South Carolina State Capital is Columbia, and the state has two mottos which are animis opibusque parati which means prepared in mind and resources, and dum spiro spero which means while I breathe, I hope.  The South Carolina State flower is the Carolina yellow jessamine (1924).  The South Carolina State tree is the palmetto tree (1939).  The South Carolina State bird is the Carolina wren (1948).  The South Carolina State song is "Carolina" (1911).
