Our handy Idaho License Plate County Numbers Key will help you decipher which County your license plate(s) were issued in. Idaho has used County Numbers on its license plates since 1932 and there are 44 Counties in Idaho.

Idaho has a number of vehicle classifications and options for both licensing and registering a vehicle. For example, Idaho has a Classic classification for vehicles that are at least 30 years old. There is an Old Timer classification for vehicles made before 1943 that are essentially not modified from factory specs. There is also a Street Rod classification for vehicles made before 1949 where the vehicle has been modified. And, of course, the YOM or Year of Manufacture classification of course, which is described in detail below.

In Idaho, vehicles made before 1974 may be eligible to use YOM or Year of Manufacture license plates with DMV approval. But there is a caveat with the use of 1969 to 1973 license plates. These may not be allowed because these did not have the year of issue embossed into the license plate.
